Was Magnum a sniper? I remember learning (in the ep where they all
went
to London) that a buddy of his had been one and hadn't ever gotten
out,
but I don't recall ever being told that Magnum was also a sniper.
We saw Thomas Sullivan Magnum set up a sniper's nest to kill the guy
that murdered his wife; he changed his mind and let him go so as not to
risk future prisoner exchanges. I don't recall if we ever saw him
actually pull the trigger as a sniper, but it's pretty clear he was
trained in it.
I'm still not so sure. I remember the scene you're talking about, but I
also remember it leaving me with an impression of a shot that any number
of competent shooters could have made. I certainly don't recall it being
a half-mile away, or any such thing, but I admit that I can't be sure.
Being a sniper takes more talent than just hitting a target a hundred
yards away, and all that.
Same notation for Dano on the original Hawai'i Five-0;
he was their sharpshooter and acted as a sniper in his official
capacity
as a cop. I don't recall if he had military training, but it seems
extremely unlikely that he wouldn't. Did Danny on LAS VEGAS have a
sniperous past?
Sounds vaguely familiar, but again it's so long ago that I can't recall
for sure.
If the Magnum P.I. group hadn't been destroyed by trolls, we could get
an answer in a heartbeat. As it is, I'll forward this to MPI Guru David
Romas and see what he has to say ...
That's too bad. I didn't spend time on that group back whenever it would
have been well represented, but I keep tabs on it now, and yeah, there's
no activity that gets past my filters whatsoever. Maybe I'll post
something relevant there at some point, just to see if anyone else is
still around. I definitely would have enjoyed some show discussions
there back in the day.
Yeah, it was a good little group; I'm still friends with people I met
there. We even had the late great Mac Reynolds posting! There was
supposedly an attempt to move to a private posting place called Da Nang
or something, but I posted once and was instantly jumped on by hate
speech trolls and walked away. I'm not sure what happened there; either
the trolls had infiltrated, or it was always their place and a trick to
start with.
In any case, let me know if you hear anything! I may even look to see if
I still have the ep in question on VHS somewhere around here...

David Romas replies:

MPI actually being discussed in a USENET newsgroup?! Awww. I'm misty.

Those posters posted good info. TM never is described as, specifically,
a sniper. The whole set up to his (aborted) attempt to pick off the
younger Ki in "Unfinished Business" arguably at least suggests
sniper-like training and/or skills. In "Deja Vu" (the "they all go to
London" ep.) he's seen in war flashbacks on an assassination mission
spotting for a sniper. In "Memories Are Forever" Colonel Ki describes
him as "...a key member of one of their [USN's] assassination teams." In
"All For One" Tyler McKinney describes him as "...one of the best I ever
saw at goin' behind the lines and bringin' back the scalps."

He's described as a lot of things other than sniper: intelligence
officer in "Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii," counter insurgent expert in
"J. 'Digger' Doyle,"

Aside from all of this, he's a former SEAL (likely the first portrayal
of one in any medium), so it might be presumable based on that alone
that he received some amount of sniper training; it's thought that
they're given some amount of training on pretty much everything.

Yep. I'm sure that he couldn't have helped but to pick up some things
over the years, either simply by observation or by directly pumping a
given sniper for info and tips.

Yep. So he's no complete stranger to the role.

TM was the command leader of his Vietnam team, right? Were snipers
routinely put in that leadership role? I'm gonna guess "no," but I have
no idea. And the key word is "routinely," as I'm sure that there were
plenty of times when everyone above the sniper in rank on a given team
was wiped out, effectively making the sniper the leader of the remainder
of the team, if only on a temporary basis.

Definitely weapons training, but I have no idea of how much
sniper-related training was/is required for *all* SEALs.

Magnum is both dated and timeless for me. The clothes, hair and porn
'stache scream out "1980s!" while the stories could almost all apply
just as easily to the present day. I never get tired of watching my
favorite re-runs of this one, most of which I still have on tape.

Does your guide tell you episode info? I'd watch retroTV except our
guide doesn't tell you anything more than what series, and often not
even that.

I use Zap2it for the episode guide of the episode. My ota tv hasn't been able to get the guide for months for some reason, it hasn't updated it like it used to.

I have a ton of favorite episodes on VHS tape to this day, but I admit
that most of them are gathering dust. There are some, though--my
favorite faves--that still get regular workouts.

I'd probably have to say that it was the show that I most closely
identify with the 1980s, and THE X-FILES was the show that I most
closely identify with the 1990s. For better or worse, and at first
glance, LOST would probably be that show for me for the 2000s, although
I reserve the right to change my mind on that last point. :)

I haven't used the VHS (much less the beta!) in the stack with the DVR
under the TV in so long that the next time I rearrange stuff I think I'm
going to retire them. :(

Oh, I'm not throwing it OUT, just putting it in a closet.
I've got plenty of room, with only a VCR, a DVD player and my TiVo
hooked up to the television. Of course, I've never been motivated to
hook up everything separately, so I have to switch out a few wires
between the DVD player and the VCR on those rare occasions when I want a
VHS fix. No biggie. though. They both sit on top of a floor speaker at
about chest height, so it takes all of about five seconds.

I don't think I bothered to put the VCR connections back when I last
tore everything down to replace the batteries in the UPSs. It's sad
really. I could make room in the stack for the PS3, which is out on a

I'm painfully aware Urich is gone every time a new Spenser novel comes

will never be another' comes out May 3!)

It's interesting how less dated it is than Hawai'i Five-0, which I like
too, but it's hard to believe one began right when the other ended. Or
that Airwolf spun off from it ... Airwolf seems totally antiquated now.
The main problem, which affects everything of the era but most of all
detective (or any 'in peril') show, is the lack of cell phones. It's
amazing how we went from 'cool but silly we'll never have those things
Kirk carries' to 'why the Hell doesn't he call for help?' in such a
short span of time.

THE X-FILES is the show that, for me, bridged that cellphone issue. At
the start of the series, cellphones simply weren't a part of any plot
equation, but they were a key component of things later on. I can
distinctly remember one episode where they simply muffed the entire
concept, and largely because it was such a new one for everyone. This
was an ep when cell phones were first starting to become significant. In
it, Mulder was trying to reach Scully, but he tried her apartment first
(where she still had an answering machine to take the call) and then he
called the hotel where she would be staying and left a message there.
Only later did he try her cellphone, and there was no explanation given
for why that wasn't his first approach. After all, they'd already been
using cellphones earlier in the episode (Scully had used hers to tell
Mulder where she would be staying, in fact) and in previous episodes. In
the end, I don't know if it was more of an indictment of Mulder or of
the writers. :)
