At the end of Resolutions on the new DVDs, I was disappointed that it
didn't include the montage of clips from throughout the series during the
closing credits that I had remembered from the original airing. So I
pulled out my 20 year old tape from the original broadcast (and crossed my
fingers that it was still viewable) to re-watch that montage. As I was
fastforwarding through the tape, I caught a glimpce of the ferarri stopped
at the military gate. What? I didn't remember seeing that on the DVD.
Looked over at the DVD and, sure enough, it was missing. It was a very
short bit of Magnum going through the military gate just before talking to
the radio guy - the DVD cuts straight to the radio guy. A real short bit,
so not too bad, but I was expecting the DVD to have the original airing.
So I kept looking at the tape further and found 2 glaring cuts from the
original that were not on the DVD (all 3 of these cuts were coming out of
commercials). First big cut: Magnum pulls out papers (guess military
reinlistment forms) and starts to look at them when Higgins walks in and
Magnum then hides them while Higgins asks 3 questions (about the tux,
about the bachlor party, about if Magnum is bringing a date to the
dinner), Magnum quickly answers and then shoos Higgins out as the phone
rings, on the phone is the radio guy who says that there is definitely a
noise but he doesn't know what yet and he'll keep looking into it, then
Magnum calls his mom - the DVD cuts directly to his mom. Second big cut:
Magnum and Lt. Page are on the beach talking, Page is complaining about
how he doesn't look like a Hawaiian even though he's lived there a while
and eventually he gets to the reason he came to talk to Magnum, to let him
know about Linda Lee being attacked in the park and Page explains that
there is a gap in the security coverage for Linda Lee which is why Magnum
starts following her to and from work - this whole sequence is completely
cut from the DVD.

Very disappointing. As I said, I was expecting the original airing on the
DVD, but it looks like we got the syndicate/rerun shorten version. The
hint should have been that Resolutions was divided into Part 1 and Part 2
while the original airing was a 2 hour CBS special (and the usual opening
was not used at all in the original).

On the brighter side, I was excited to find that Season 8 DVDs had 3
commentary tracks. And then disappointed that the 2 tracks with writer
Jay Huguely contained little insight and lots of errors - I knew more
about what was going on that he did [and I had a flashback to the classic
SNL skit where William Shattner address a Star Trek convention and
tells them to "Get a life"]. But the commentary with Charles Floyd
Johnson was very good. And I also enjoyed the Rockford Files episode of
"White on White and Nearly Perfect", which I had never seen.

That sucks if they've not even giving you the original.
Even Sanford & Son has given people the originals on DVD despite the use
of nigger being so taboo these days.
Having said that they'll know I'll still buy all the Magnum DVD sets.
