You shouldn't trust anything IMDB.com syas anyway - it's known as
"I'MaDumBum.com" for a very good readon. Everything on that silly
website is submitted by the users and never checked, so much of it is
just utter rubbish and web rumour, especially for up-coming projects.

If you want reliable information try using places like SciFi.com,
ComingSoon.net, etc. and avoid IMDB.com like the plague.

Here's ComingSoon.net's take on the news ...

Thurber to Write & Direct Magnum P.I.
-------------------------------------
Rawson Marshall Thurber will write and direct the
big screen adaptation of Magnum P.I. for Universal
Pictures, reports Variety. Brian Grazer and Imagine
Entertainment are producing.

Thurber directed 2003's summer comedy hit
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story for 20th Century
Fox. Along with that film's star Ben Stiller and
producer Start Cornfeld, Thurber set up a
high-concept comedy last week at DreamWorks
Pictures.

When Imagine first optioned the original 1980s
action series in 2003, Mike McCullers, who co-wrote
the last two "Austin Powers" sequels with Mike
Myers, was hired to pen a draft.

Tom Selleck, John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley and
Larry Manetti starred in the TV series.

Oh no!!! They're hiring "comedy" writers ... this instantly looks like
yet another "remake" movie that will "suck bigtime" or is a silly
parody. Grrrrr!!! X-(

According to CNN the movie will not be a comedy but will be just like the
tv series. Just like what the upcoming Miami Vice movie is doing.

It'll never be "just like the TV series" since they'll be using
different actors - Tom Selleck *IS* Thomas Magnum.

We can hope they get close, and we can even pray that they get closer
than almost all the other barely recognisable, garbage "remake" /
"update" movies coming out of Hollyweird ... but unfortunately history
shows that the odds are against it. :-(

this is true, I can think of only one tv show movie remake that worked
"the Fugitive" that's about it. I love Magnum, but IMO the odd's are
against this movie even if they used the original (now mostly geriatic
cast). I believe it when I hear they are filming...

The last idea I read was that it was gogin to be about Magnum's brother
based in Los Angeles ... the only remote similarity with the TV show
being that he's a PI with the surname Magnum and drives a Ferrari. It's
that kind of idiocy that makes me hate "remake" / "update" movies and
shows. Such an idea would never be "Magnum PI" - more like "Magnum PI:
The Next Generation". :-\

The planned Quantum Leap was really more of a sequel series, following
a female leaper trying to find Sam. A movie version of Greatest
American Hero was planned, but I don't know whether or not these have
been dropped now ... hopefully they have.

One of the studios David Hasselhoff approached with his Knight Rider
movie wanted to KITT not to talk ... which just about sums up the
complete and utter idiocy of the people in charge of these "remake" /
"update" movies and shows. X-(

Patton Oswalt talks about this idiocy in Hollywood. He describes a TV
network censor discussing a skit: "Yeah, that Hitler sketch was
funny...but could he not be anti-Semitic? 'Cuz, we're gonna get

I dont see it, would be a complete failure... even the orig show if
it were released now would not be successful, people dont go for
cheesy shows like that anymore (which in some ways is too bad).

I dont see this being popular, you just know they'd change everything
and it would be nightmare.

When it comes to MPI, well I admit I think regardless of what they do
(including using the orig cast) it will prob be a failure. I love
the orig show and I just dont you can bring it back at this point, but
it's possible (altho 99% unlikely) they could find the right actors
and the right script to do it right but then again it's possible I'll
buy a lottery ticket tommorow and win 10 million dollars.

so here is hoping!

BTW KITT not talking? Last I heard Kitt was destroyed and they had
some new car. Yes I admit it, I watched part of the Knighrider 2000
(or whatever it was called). I hear Chevy is bringing back the
Camaro, maybe Pontiac will make a Firebird too and Kitt can rise
again!

I think it's gonna be a flop regardless of who they get to play
Magnum. Like Selleck has said in the past "the ship has sailed on a
reunion" and I think it's prob best to leave it alone. Althought
while Mosley and Hillerman prob are too old to do their part's
justice.. Selleck could still do an older Magnum (judging from his
recent stint as Jesse Stone on Night Passage).

Yeah like having anything to do with the last two Austin Powers movies is

Between rumors of a Magnum movie and the likelyhood of an A-Team movie, I
think that's two big TV inspirations of mine that will be shat on in this

There's lots of other old shows that have been destroyed by

"Higgins!!!!!" "Did you find my purse!!!"
- "Magnum, why do I have SUCH a homosexual voice?!
-(fruity voice cracking): "YOU?! You tell ME!"

I had the TV on in the background (WUAB-TV43 Cleveland) and had Magnum
P.I. on one Sunday afternoon and was on the computer just listening to
it. My god, what a fruity voice Tom Selleck has! It's totally laughable.

See other "reportings" below. Funny how various writers jump to
very different conclusions - on one site the fabled Brian Grazer
"MPI movie project" is said to be planned to be a spoof, on the next
is said to be planned to be in line with the TV series. They're all
working with the same source material (which itself, whatever it is,
I would view as highly questionable - after 15 years of this same
rumor mill, I'll believe there's an MPI movie in the works when I'm
in a theater and its opening titles are rolling) but inject their
own jumped-to conclusions and pass those off as "news."

Note that no actors have been named *or* ruled out (including the
original cast) apparently...at least as of yet.

Couldn't it be both? As I recall, the series itself was filmed pretty
much tongue in cheek.
